The town of Altea lies on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, in the north of the Marina Baja district. It is set on the Mediterranean coast of the Bay of Altea, south of Calpe and north of Alfaz del Pi. The Prime Meridian passes through its northern part as well as its bay.
The municipality borders, from south to northeast and clockwise: Alfaz del Pi and La Nucia, Callosa d'en Sarria, Jalon, Benissa and Calpe. The last three belong to the Marina Alta district.
Altea keeps closer ties with Alfaz del Pi, La Nucia and Callosa d'en Sarria, since the Sierra de Bernia to the north acts as a natural barrier and as a border between the Marina Baja and Marina Alta districts.
